Menière’s Disease 2015: diagnosis guidelines and treatment Franco Trabalzini
Otology and Skull Base Surgery Department, Siena University Hospital, Italy
In 2015, the diagnostic criteria for Menière’s disease were updated, with the goal ofdeveloping international consensus. The new criteria were formulated jointly over a
four-year period by representatives from the Bárány Society, the European Academy of Otology and Neurotology (EAONO), the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), the Korean Balance Society, and the Japanese Society for Equilibrium Research. This update includes just two diagnostic categories: definite and probable Menière’s disease. Definite Menière’s disease requires episodic vertigo lasting between 20 minutes and 12 hours, with low-to-mid frequency sensorineural hearing loss and fluctuating aural symptoms such as hearing, tinnitus or aural fullness in the affected ear. Probable Menière’s disease is more broadly defined: episodic vestibular symptoms including vertigo or dizziness, simultaneously associated with fluctuations in aural symptoms, and lasting between 20 minutes and 24 hours. This presentation will discuss these new consensus criteria and an algorithm of medical and surgical treatment.
