Results of primary hearing reconstruction by autologous or homologous ossicles in chronic otitis media patients: a prospective cohort study
Farhad Farahani

Introduction: This study is aimed to evaluate results of primary ossicular
reconstruction in patients with chronic otitis media.

Material & Methods: This prospective cohort study consisted of52 patients who
underwent either tympanomastoidectomy or tympanoplasty together with ossicular
reconstruction. Pure Tone Audiometery (PTA) was done for the patients before and
after the operation. Air Bone Gap (ABG), Speech Reception Threshold (SRT), and
Speech Discrimination Score (SDS) were measured pre and postoperatively.

Results: The mean (SD) score of hearing threshold was 43.26(10.81) dB
preoperatively, while it was 30.63(11.62) dB postoperatively. The mean scores of
pre- and postoperative ABG were 30.31(8.66) and 20.67(8.33)dB respectively.
Comparing the mean (SD) scores of SDS revealed that it was 98.55(3.54)
preoperative and 99.65 (1.57) postoperative.

Conclusions: Reconstruction of ossicular chain using different methods of
ossiculoplasty during middle ear surgery has an important role in reducing the length
of patients’ hospitalization and related costs.
